The IEA’s new Net Zero Emissions by 2050 scenario is extremely welcome. It is not just a powerful reminder of the scale and urgency of the challenge to meet the world’s Paris commitments; with this scenario we are at least now equipped to begin to align financial slows with this ambitious target.
In essence, the IEA has filled in a key missing piece in the jigsaw for delivering the Paris Agreement. Until now, even if investors and companies have wanted to get onto a 2050 net zero pathway, they have lacked a credible benchmark against which to draw up their accounts - and - strategies. The IEA has given the market the information it needs – corporate leaders and investors must now get on with aligning their investments with Paris.
