Stewardship

Stewardship

We are committed to driving positive change on your behalf. And we see stewardship as a long-term responsibility to grow and protect your assets.

Our approach to stewardship

Three clear pillars guide our investment philosophy:

  • a robust, global thematic investment process focused on long-term drivers of value and integrating rigorous bottom-up analysis of ESG factors

  • active ownership, including with the companies we invest in and responsible voting to encourage positive change

  • systemic stewardship, including thought leadership and policy outreach where we believe our voice can help shape market and regulation.

Together, these elements form an integrated approach to stewardship, informed by long-term thinking around investment, ownership and policy. But above all, what matters to our clients is that we deliver lasting value while supporting the economy of the future.

Making Net Zero a reality

We’re all facing the effects of climate change — from investors through to companies and governments. Doing nothing is not an option. Good stewardship needs accountability, which is why we joined the Net Zero Asset Management (NZAM) initiative at the time of its launch. The NZAM is an industry-wide commitment towards net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 or sooner.

Our stewardship report

Tree Style 3

When the UK Stewardship Code was introduced in 2020, and updated in 2020 and 2025, it raised the bar for standards of accountability and responsible ownership across the investment industry. Every year since 2021, we’ve published our Stewardship Report, which shows how we comply with the Code on behalf of our clients.

How we act on your behalf

Before we invest your money, we carry out due diligence in line with our thematic investment framework. As well as looking at societal trends, we also do rigorous bottom-up analysis of environmental, social and governance (ESG) factors to make sure the company aligns with our long-term approach.

When you invest in a company you become a shareholder. When we invest on your behalf, we pride ourselves on taking responsible ownership — engaging continuously with companies’ management teams and relevant stakeholders to make sure your money is used appropriately and protected diligently.

Share ownership brings both the opportunity and responsibility to participate in the stewardship of companies. We prioritise specific topics and goals in our engagement with companies. Where we vote on your behalf, we follow clear guidelines, which are available here.

Note: the ability to vote is dependent on the operational restrictions of the selected third-party custodian. Some third-party custodians do not support proxy voting in some or all markets.

Our stewardship responsibilities go beyond engaging with individual companies. We will proactively share our views on policy and engage with market regulators and standard setters if we think they’ll help shape markets or regulation, often alongside other investors.

Rated by experts

The Principles for Responsible Investment (PRI) assesses investors’ commitment to responsible investment based on annual submissions.

In the most recent assessment, Sarasin & Partners received the top score — five stars — in five out of six modules, and four stars in the remaining module. We performed above the median across the board.

You can view our latest PRI Transparency Report through the link below.

The Financial Reporting Council (FRC) has also recognised the quality of our stewardship, including us in its list of UK Stewardship Code signatories.

Elsewhere, we have been awarded:

  • The ICGN Global Stewardship Disclosure Award 2024, which recognises excellence and innovation in investor stewardship and related public disclosures.
